On January 4th, according to supply chain leaks, Samsung Foundry will follow up with other competitors‘ price reduction strategies in the first quarter of this year, offering discounts of 5-15% and expressing willingness to negotiate.
Since the second half of last year, due to weak market demand, wafer foundries have been lowering prices to compete for orders. The price reduction for mature 8-inch and 12 inch processes can reach up to 20% to 30%. Even TSMC, the leading wafer foundry, has announced that it will offer a price discount of about 2% for some mature processes this year, and 7nm will also offer a maximum price discount of about 10%. The specific discount will depend on the amount of orders placed by customers.
Recently, there have been rumors in the industry that Samsung‘s wafer foundry department will also follow up on its price reduction strategy in the first quarter of this year, offering a price discount of 5-15%. From the perspective of industry conditions, wafer foundry manufacturers have proposed price revisions to maintain capacity utilization, and Samsung‘s wafer foundry department is also following up to compete for market orders. It is worth mentioning that Samsung is competing with TSMC in processes below 5nm and has been actively negotiating with customers to seek cooperation opportunities with Qualcomm, Pfizer, and AMD.
From the perspective of the global wafer foundry market, according to TrendForce data, Taiwan, China will account for about 46% of the global wafer foundry capacity in 2023, followed by Chinese Mainland (26%), South Korea (12%), the United States (6%) and Japan (2%). As Chinese Mainland and the United States and other regions are actively increasing the proportion of local wafer manufacturing capacity, it is estimated that by 2027, the proportion of capacity in Taiwan, China and South Korea will respectively reach 41% and 10%.
